Mountain Bike race reports from Flitch Bikes Ltd
The sun came out on Flitch Bikes Ltd team riders Alex Kings and Stuart Carmichael this Sunday 30th October when they raced with 250 other keen Mountain Bike riders at the Kings Lynn Cycling Club and Revel Outdoors first round of four Winter Series.
The six mile Santon Downham course comprised mainly of sweeping, whooping and bumpy single track linked up with sections of fire road ment that a good start was vital to stand any chance of a competitive finish as overtaking opportunities were hard fought.
Both Alex and Stuart made it out front from the gun in their one and a half hour plus the lap you are on races. As the race settled down Alex consolidated third spot by ten minutes to get his first podium finish in his fledgling MTB career racing as a Junior.
In the Vets race Stuart was exchanging first, second and third with two other riders for the whole event which was shaping up to be a sprint finish until a collision with another racer took him out of the running on the last lap to finish sixth.
Sunday the 15thJanuary in Therford Forest Brandon was just nudging above freezing with a steady mizzle falling trying its best to become rain. The ground was frozen causing ice to form on its surface. Surely ideal Mountain Bike Racing conditions in any madmans book. Well about 200 mad man and women thought so for the third round of the Kings Lynn Revel Outdoors Winter Mtb Series!
Locally Alex Kings (junior male 1.5hrs) and Stuart Carmichael (vet male 1.5hrs) from Flitch Bikes Ltd and Sally Watts (senior female 3hr) from Tee Boy Racing were amongst those taking part.
The six mile lap was already well cut up on the twisty singletrack through the trees by the 3hour racers before the 1.5 hour competitiors started, causing a fair amount of tree hugging with the tough bike control! On the more open sections of the race lap ice had formed with water on top creating further mayhem. After one lap all riders looked like they had just climbed out of a primevil swamp!
Alex Kings battled hard in his first race in such conditions but suffered with the freezing conditions to come in 6th. Stuart Carmichael, a more seasoned winter racer coped better achieving a series best of 2nd after a close fought battle for first over the last two laps. Sally Watts had an amazing result in her second ever MTB race also coming 2nd in her class!
